Every self-custody wallet can be verified. Most wallets support more than one method, so the tables below list the wallets users verify most often, the method that suits each one best, and the alternatives that also work.
- Sign a message (Recommended) - the most private method, for single-key wallets that can sign a message with the key behind your address. Step-by-step guide.
- Extended public key (Acceptable) - for wallets that display an xpub, ypub or zpub, and the method that skips the emailed confirmation code. An extended public key shares your wallet history with Bitaroo, so read the privacy notes first.
- Wallet descriptor (Multisig) - for multisig wallets, including collaborative custody vaults. Paste the output descriptor your wallet exports and Bitaroo confirms the address belongs to that wallet. A descriptor reveals the vault's addresses, so the same privacy notes apply.
- Satoshi Test (Costly) - for every wallet. You spend a small amount of bitcoin from the address to prove you control it. How it works.
The methods on offer depend on the address type, so single-key wallets and multisig wallets are listed separately. Wallets that can be either, such as Electrum and Sparrow, appear in both tables.
Bitaroo Wallet - verified automatically. The Bitaroo Wallet proves ownership of its keys when it is created, so it is verified before your first withdrawal. Select your Bitaroo Wallet when withdrawing and each send goes to a fresh address in your wallet.

Multisig wallets
| Wallet | How to verify | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitkey | Wallet descriptor | In the Bitkey app choose Settings, then Exports, then Current wallet descriptor. Paste the whole export, including the External and Internal labels, and Bitaroo reads the correct part for you. |
| Coldcard | Wallet descriptor | Multisig descriptor exports from a Coldcard paste straight in, including receive-only exports. See the Coldcard security advisory. |
| Electrum | Satoshi Test | Electrum multisig wallets verify with the Satoshi Test, as Electrum does not export a wallet descriptor. |
| Muun | Satoshi Test | Muun wallets are multisig under the hood and Muun does not export a shareable descriptor, so the Satoshi Test is the way to verify. Never paste your Muun Emergency Kit anywhere. It contains your private keys. |
| Nunchuk | Wallet descriptor | Copy the wallet's descriptor from the wallet configuration screen, or paste a whole BSMS export file and Bitaroo reads the descriptor line for you. |
| Sparrow | Wallet descriptor | Sparrow shows the wallet descriptor in its Settings tab. Copy it and paste it in. |
| Theya | Wallet descriptor | In the Theya app open Vault Settings, choose Export Output Descriptor, and paste the export as it is. |
| Any other multisig wallet | Wallet descriptor or Satoshi Test | If the wallet app can export an output descriptor, paste it in. The Satoshi Test always works. |
Every wallet can be verified. If yours is not listed above, the Satoshi Test always works, and most software wallets can also sign a message or display an extended public key. Unsure which method fits your wallet? Contact support before starting your withdrawal.
Privacy Matters
Bitaroo built this verification model to protect your privacy, as well as the privacy of all its other users. Australia's Travel Rule would otherwise force the routine sharing of your personal information with third parties. Bitaroo opted out of that model, and never holds your keys. Whichever wallet you use, you can choose the method that shares the least: signing a message reveals nothing beyond the address you are verifying, an extended public key or wallet descriptor reveals your wallet's addresses, and the Satoshi Test reveals only the single payment you send.
